September 19, 2003 - San Angelo Health Foundation Issues Challenge Grant to Establish New Endowed Scholarships at the San Angelo Area Foundation

The San Angelo Area Foundation is pleased to announce a collaborative grant agreement with the San Angelo Health Foundation. The grant provides up to $400,000 through 2005 to be used as matches for newly established Endowed Scholarship Funds that will be managed by the San Angelo Area Foundation. The grant will provide up to a $20,000 match per newly created fund. These funds will be used to provide scholarships to area students for higher education.

“This is truly an exciting opportunity to create college scholarships for the youth of our area which will last a lifetime.” San Angelo Area Foundation Board Chairman F. L. “Steve” Stephens said, today. “This type of grant will further the educational health of the students in San Angelo and the surrounding area and allow donors the chance to see their gift double.”

Former Mayor Rudy Izzard is one of the first donors to utilize this match in honor of his parents, creating the Dub and June Izzard Scholarship Fund. The San Angelo Health Foundation will match his gift, creating an endowed scholarship fund. This fund will start awarding scholarships in the spring of 2004 and will continue in perpetuity. Raymond Meza also has taken advantage of this match by creating a scholarship in memory of his son Raymond Torres Meza, II who passed away earlier this year. The Raymond Torres Meza II Memorial Scholarship Fund will award a scholarship to a graduating student athlete from Central High School who plans to attend Angelo State University.

Leanorah Hendry established the Karen Kay Huddleston Memorial Scholarship Fund in memory of her daughter, who passed away last year. This fund will award a scholarship to a student pursuing an arts degree at either Angelo State University or to Texas A&M University.
